How do I resolve this error message? This is an Attorney Filing PACER account. PacerPro requires a View-Only PACER account

Find out what this error means, and how you can resolve it in order to search/download on PacerPro

Case Search Only PACER credentials must be stored in PacerPro accounts in order to search for and bookmark cases, download documents, and run Docket Updates. These credentials must not be linked to attorney CM/ECF filing credentials.

If you're seeing this error message, it means that the PACER credentials stored in your or your firm's PacerPro account have been linked to at least one attorney CM/ECF filing account.

Due to NextGen requirements, an attorney's own PACER credentials are generally not recommended to be stored in PacerPro.

Tip: Some firms choose to create a new PACER account used only for PacerPro, so that it is easy to identify activity via PacerPro, as well as to ensure attorneys don't inadvertently link their filing credentials to the search account used in PacerPro.

Troubleshooting

Below are some common reasons why you might receive this error message:

  1. An attorney's PACER account, which is linked to their CM/ECF filing accounts, was entered in PacerPro. This should be replaced with a Case Search Only account that belongs to a non-attorney member of the staff, or a generic account used for research purposes only.
  2. An attorney inadvertently linked their filing credentials in a federal court to the firm's case search only account
    1. To resolve this issue, contact your firm's PacerPro administrator, or log into the stored PACER account to determine which attorney and court have been linked
    2. The PacerPro error will persist until either a firm administrator
      1. de-links the attorney filing credential from the the firm's PACER search account, or
      2. replaces the search credentials stored in PacerPro

To update stored search credentials:

  • Solo account holders only: edit stored PACER credentials on the bottom right of your profile here*
  • If you are a member of a law firm or other organization that uses PacerPro, your firm's PacerPro administrator can manage stored credentials from the Admin site.

*Do not update this profile if you are a member of a firm/organization with multiple PacerPro users
